Sung Im Her obtained a master’s degree in contemporary dance at Hansung University in 2003, then she moved to Brussels, Belgium to study at P.A.R.T.S., contemporary dance school.
After graduating in 2006, she started working with Jan Fabre/Troubleyn , Les ballets C de la B , Needcompany.
In 2019, Sung Im Her took up the role of choreographic director during the production of ‘Trois Contes’ by Opéra de Lille in Lille, France.
In 2012, Sung Im Her also began creating works of her own, starting with Philia (2012), En-trance (2013) and Tuning (2014). In 2016, she moved to London, the United Kingdom and was selected for Testbeds Catalyst, a year-long programme for mid-career artists. In 2018, she was commissioned by Counterpoint Arts to create the site-specific work ‘Human Wall’. In 2019, she created two new works: ‘NUTCRUSHER’ and ‘W.A.Y’. Both works were commissioned by the Korean Arts Council and premiered at the renowned ARKO Arts Theater in Seoul. With NUTCRUSHER she was elected by the Korean Arts Council as Best Emerging Artist of 2019. In 2020, NUTCRUSHER was also selected for Aerowaves’ The Twenty21. Later that year, Sung Im Her created the dance solo ‘The I of the Beholder’ together with contemporary electronic music duo ‘Husk Husk’. The work was commissioned by the V&A Museum and supported by Arts Council England. Also in 2020, at the height of the pandemic, she created Time in Between Time, a 4-hour durational performance for two dancers. The performance was supported by Arts Council England and Seoul Foundation of Arts and culture and premiered in November 2020 at Platform-L in Seoul. In 2021, Sung Im Her reworked the dance piece ‘W.A.Y’ with a new cast and created W.A.Y (re-work). The work premiered at the renowned theatre ‘The Place’ in London and was very well received. For example, The Guardian praised the live performance with a four-star review.
